A panto is a colourful theatre production. Pantos can be seen all over Britain, usually around Christmas. The productions are funny, loud, and include songs, dance and colourful costumes. Usually, the story is based on a fairy tale or other well known stories, like Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin, Jack and the Beanstalk, and many others. The stories also include topical jokes about things that happen in the world or in the region at the moment. An important element is audience participation.

What role do the Heroine and the Hero play in the panto?

They are the main characters who have a goal to achieve. Almost always, they end up falling in love with each other and get married at the end.

What do the Dame and the Comic do?

They help the Hero and the Heroine along, but they also produce a lot of chaos and comedy. They are here to make the people laugh.
